Station 5 Opens Its Door
A New Era of Safety and Service for Harrisonburg
Harman Construction is proud to celebrate the official opening of Harrisonburg Fire Station 5, a landmark project designed to strengthen emergency response for the city’s north end. Following the recent ribbon cutting, the station is now fully operational and already making a difference for the Park View community.
Built for a Growing Community
Station 5 fills a long-standing need in a rapidly expanding area that includes Eastern Mennonite University, the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, multiple schools, and a developing commercial corridor. Prior to this project, response times in this part of the city could stretch beyond six minutes. With Station 5 online, firefighters can now reach calls faster while easing demand on other stations across Harrisonburg.
Inside the New Facility
When we walked through the station with Chief Tobia and Captain Weaver, the pride behind this project was immediately evident. The building was designed with efficiency and safety in mind, starting with a 24/7 public entry vestibule that gives visitors immediate access to emergency assistance.
Inside, the team highlighted spaces that support both daily workflow and long-term wellbeing:
A welcoming kitchen and dining area where crews start their days and solve problems together.
A lounge equipped with dual screens, one for news and one tied directly to live CAD call information.
A dedicated fitness room, a favorite among firefighters, underscoring the importance of physical readiness.
Private bunk rooms, modern locker spaces, and well-designed offices for both officers and firefighters.
In the Butler Steel apparatus bay, four drive-through bays eliminate the need for backing in and improve safety for personnel. The bay also features a dedicated decontamination room, a vehicle exhaust system with multiple hookups, and automated exhaust fans tied to CO sensors.
Collaboration at Its Core
Station 5 reflects what is possible through strong partnerships. Harman Construction is grateful to have delivered this project alongside Mather and Daly Architects, Monteverde Engineering, and MEI, in close collaboration with the City of Harrisonburg and the Harrisonburg Fire Department.
We are honored to have been your construction partner on this generational investment in public safety and are excited for the positive impact Station 5 will bring to the community for years to come.
