Building The Next Chapter of Kids Castle
Honoring a Beloved Harrisonburg Tradition
Kids Castle at Purcell Park has been a local treasure since volunteers first built the wooden play structure in the 1990s. As the years passed, weathering and flooding made it clear the iconic playground needed renewal. Harman Construction is proud to help bring this next chapter to life with a design that respects the past while preparing the space for future generations.
Collaboration at the Core
This project reflects true community partnership. Harman Construction, Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation, the landscape architect, and key suppliers worked together to craft a vision that maintains the classic castle feel while enhancing safety, durability, and accessibility. The result is a refreshed design that balances nostalgia with thoughtful innovation.
Durable Design and Elevated Features
A major focus of the rebuild is long-term strength. Portions of the site were raised to help address historic flooding issues, and the new structure is built using Robinia wood, a hardwood known for its natural rot and insect resistance. Beneath the castle, a substantial caged footing system and integrated drainage add stability that supports both safety and longevity.
A Play Experience Reimagined
The updated Kids Castle introduces elevated walkways, climbing nets, and a custom castle tower that leads to a nearly 25 foot spiral slide. ADA accessible features expand inclusivity, and additional elements like a future zipline, rubberized surfacing, and a tricycle loop bring even more opportunities for play. A drawbridge-inspired entrance sets the tone for an imaginative experience from the moment families arrive.
Nearing the Finish Line
Eager to welcome the community back in, the Harman Construction team continues to push progress forward through the winter season. Soon, Kids Castle will reopen as a renewed community landmark, bringing fun and excitement for all.
