Bringing Light & Life to Sunnyside Retirement Community
At Harman Construction, we don’t just build—we rethink what spaces can do. Our renovation of the Woodside Atrium at Sunnyside Retirement Community is a fresh example of how thoughtful construction can elevate daily living—and we couldn’t have done it without our partners at Mather Architects, who brought the vision and design to life.
More Than a Makeover: A New Kind of Everyday
This project wasn’t just about making the space look better—it was about making it work better. By transforming an open-air courtyard into a year-round indoor atrium, we created a space that invites people in, no matter the season.
Natural light pours in through an expansive skylight, cutting down on the need for artificial lighting and giving the entire area a brighter, more uplifting feel. Improved airflow and ventilation add to the comfort, creating a healthier environment that encourages people to enjoy, connect, and relax.
Designed for Everyone
Accessibility was front and center throughout the design. A central elevator now connects key areas—like the café and gathering spots—making it easy for all residents to move freely and comfortably. Clean hallways and intuitive flow make the space feel open and easy to navigate, while quality finishes give it a polished, timeless feel without overcomplicating the design.
All of this was accomplished while residents continued living in the space, making the transformation even more of a critical focus. Minimizing disruption and maintaining comfort during construction was a top priority.
A Place That Brings People Together
What we love most? Seeing how the space is being used. The atrium has quickly become a lively social hub—where chats spark over coffee, neighbors catch up, and everyday moments feel just a little more special. Sunnyside has long been a cornerstone of the Harrisonburg community, and we’re proud to be part of their story.
