Expanding Massanutten’s Indoor Water Park Experience
We are proud to be part of the Massanutten Indoor Water Park expansion, a 25,000 square-foot addition to the existing facility. This project required specialized construction methods and careful coordination to deliver a structure built to perform in a demanding, high-moisture environment.
Specialized Tilt-Up Construction
The addition was constructed using insulated concrete tilt-up wall panels that were formed and cast on site. These panels were designed to provide durability on both the interior and exterior surfaces, making them well suited for a water park setting. Insulation is built directly into the panels, creating a high-performance wall system without the need for additional interior finishes.
Managing Tight Clearances and Heavy Lifts
One of the defining challenges of the project was erecting large concrete panels in extremely tight conditions alongside the existing water park. In some locations, new walls were placed just inches from the current structure. Panels weighing up to 68 tons were lifted into place using a 350-ton crawler crane, requiring detailed planning and precise execution to ensure safety and accuracy throughout the process.
Adapting to Site and Schedule Constraints
Unlike typical tilt-up projects, this expansion did not include a permanent floor slab during panel construction. Temporary casting beds were installed to allow the panels to be formed and poured on site, then removed later to accommodate pools and water features. Construction also took place during cold weather, requiring additional measures to maintain proper curing conditions for the concrete.
Enhancing a Regional Destination
This expansion supports a major indoor water park destination that attracts visitors year-round. We’re excited to contribute to a project that expands an established attraction while working through the challenges and coordination required to deliver a complex structure of this scale.
